For Love To Live
by Freewind
Each day, she swam to the shore
To stare upon the castle on the crowning hill
A castle in the air
Each day, she hid in the reeds
And looked with longing on what could not be
He walked there, the fine prince
Totally unaware she watched from afar
She stared with violet eyes full of stars
For a dream not meant for such as she
She loved her world of blue shadows
And lullaby waves
Her home of vastness
No one place did she have to stay
Yet, lounging in a tidal pool one day
Basking in the radiant sun
She saw him walking
And her heart came undone
So for weeks she swam to the shore
And gazed upon a dream filled with thoughts galore
The seasons came and went
Until the days grew short
She saw him no longer
But heard two nearby ladies in waiting say
"The prince has gone to the forest
While the winter season is in sport
He had left the castle by her sea
And over land, he went where she could not go
With the dawning of truth
She faced her own fooling of herself
She had loved an intangible thought
Where a mermaid would never fit
She was a creature of fantasy
And never would be real to such as he
So, she left the castle in the air's shore
And swam back deep into the sea
Knowing she would come no more
The mermaid swam deep within her sea
Filled with blue shadows and lullabye waves
Her sea that buffered the sorrow of above
The loss of impossible love
She swam far out to sea
To an island she knew
No human had been to
She swam slowly into the quiet cove
Filled with gentle serenity
And unbroken tranquility
Her heart was heavy but her mind right
As she knew she had seen the truth
In its clearest light
The castle in the air
Was not where she belonged
But in misted beauty and fantasy's world
To sing her lilting song
She perched herself upon a smooth rock
And stared into water crystal clear
She then realized she was not alone
As another creature of fantasy had appeared
A majestic white unicorn with his horn of gold
Stood gazing at her with soft gentle eyes
His compassion mirrored there
And his reassuring presence filled her
He thrust forth his spiraled horn
A healer by legend all
To heal the wounds reality had inflicted
Upon a mermaid, gentle and small
She extended her hand in return
Touching that magick horn
And in that moment, an understanding was born
That true love knows no barriers at all
A lonely unicorn, island bound
And a cast-adrift mermaid found
Love within each other beyond gender or breed
A love of caring, sharing and longing for need
The need to be needed; the need to give
The need to hope and the need for love to live
